New SQL Server on Vsphere Whitepaper
There is a new whitepaper on running SQL Server on VMWare Vsphere. It is a good read even if you do not have a virtualized environment. It gives you some good ideas on testing methodology.
The good news is, based on the whitepaper, SQL runs good on Vsphere and does so mostly out of the box with little SQL Server specific tweaking. I hope to see some production apps running on Vsphere soon and will compare the real world results with the lab results. I am pretty hopeful a Vsphere\SQL Server combination is a good one. The ESX 3.5\SQL Server whitepaper did not show physical vs. virtual numbers so one would assume that they were not stellar.
If you are too lazy to read, I summarize the key point I found interesting.
- A two vCPU VM performs 92% as well as a physical machine.
- An eight vCPU VM performs 86% as well as a physical machine.
- Enable AMD-V if your server supports it
- Use Large Pages
- Most IO and network enhancements come straight out of the box and require no configuration
There whitepaper can be found here.
